What is SMD / COB/ SOB :

SMD LED Strip Light: Single packaged LED + PCB board

  • Surface mount device LED strip, chips are mounted on the surface of PCB board, single chip is independently packaged, common models: SMD2835/3528/5050

COB LED Strip Light : Multiple bare chips+ PCB board+Silicone

Chip-on-board LED strip, multiple bare chips are directly attached to PCB board and packaged into an integrated lighting surface without single lamp bead feeling

SOB LED Strip Light: Packaging chips+ PCB board+Silicone

  • Source-on-board LED strip, between SMD and COB, chips are directly mounted on board with zoned packaging, balancing density and heat dissipation

Key Performance Differences:

ItemsSMD LED Strip LightCOB LED Strip Light SOB LED Strip Light
Lighting Effect

Obvious lamp beads, easy to have light spots;

 general uniformity

No lamp beads, uniform lighting

surface, no spots/shadows; soft light

No obvious lamp beads, zoned uniform lighting,

balance softness and layering

Brightness

Moderate brightness, low single power,

 need multiple chips

High brightness, dense chips, higher

brightness per unit area than SMD

High brightness, zoned layout,

better brightness stability

Performance

Good single chip heat dissipation, general overall heat dissipation,

 heating easily in dense layout

Dense chips, poor overall heat

dissipation, need high-quality PCB

Zoned packaging, better heat dissipation than

COB, more stable than SMD

CRINormal CRI≥80/90, high CRI up to CRI≥95

Generally CRI≥80/90, high color

 rendering, accurate color restoration

CRI≥80/90, balanced color rendering,

suitable for multiple scenes

As core products of flexible LED lighting, SMD, COB and SOB LED Strip Lights differ in chip packaging, lighting effect and heat dissipation. SMD is cost-effective for basic needs, COB excels in uniform no-spot light for premium scenes, SOB balances stability and brightness for engineering projects. Choose the right one based on your lighting scenarios and quality requirements.
